The week of November 18 saw the opening of the two Starbucks locations that I wrote about last month. So on Friday some friends and I braved the crowds at sought the normally pleasurable atmosphere of the 360 Square Starbucks location. The first thing we encountered was the crowds, which surprisingly weren’t too bad. There were about 20 or so people ahead of us and what with the high levels of staff we managed to get our coffees in less than 15 minutes. While we were waiting staff handed out publications on the history of coffee and were really happy to stop and say hello. One of the staff members my friend talked to said that he was brought in from Kunming to help with the opening and he was one of many such employees brought in from other locations to assist with the setup and grand opening weekend.
Once we got inside we were overwhelmed by the presence of Christmas @ Starbucks, since the store opened just before the Christmas season they decided to start early with the Christmas promotions. One of the best parts of the marketing scheme for us was the shirts, all of which boasted the phrase “Let’s Merry” across the back. Of course they also advertised their current Christmas line up of drinks which included a Black Cherry Mocha ranging from 28 for a tall to 38 for a venti cup.
One of the best parts of Starbucks is of course the atmosphere that feels so comforting, this feeling continues in this branch as with most others. The floor plan runs in an ‘L’ shape with front counter and merchandise area directly facing the front doors and tables and chairs occupy the front window space. The space then runs along the right side of the counter with more seating and merchandise space.
In my opinion Starbucks comes at a perfect time of the year for foreigners here in Zhengzhou as it helps us feel just a little more of that Christmas spirit that is often very difficult to come by without that traditional build up period that spans from October or November depending on which country you come from. And I personally am glad for just a little more of that Christmas cheer.
